Sunrise Gears on Plymouth Drawbridge Machinery

by Fernando Solomon

Thick, dark grease coats the massive brass and iron gears of the drawbridge machinery room, their teeth interlocked in a silent, heavy embrace. Just after sunrise, the first rays of pale gold light cut through the heavy overcast, illuminating dust motes suspended above the wet concrete floor. The machinery stands beside a bridge pier, overlooking the churning river below where the water reflects the gray sky. Rust streaks the metal surfaces, against the polished sheen of the lubricated joints. Leading lines formed by the structural beams draw toward the central gear assembly, showing the monumentality of the industrial structure. one drop of oil hangs precariously from a connecting rod, catching the morning glow before falling into the shadows below.
