String Orchestra Tuning Under Night Sky
by Mei Sampson
Deep shadows pool around the edges of a concert hall in Jhang while musicians adjust their instruments under saturated amber and violet stage lights. The late autumn air hangs still, visible only in the way the players' heavy wool coats rest against the polished wood of their violins and cellos. A clear night sky presses against the high arched windows, revealing faint stars that mirror the focused expressions of the performers. The musicians cluster near the frame's edge, their bows held loosely as they seek pitch. Dust motes float in the narrow beams of light cutting through the dark interior, settling on the intricate carvings of the wooden instrument cases lined up against the wall. One violin scroll catches the glow, its varnish reflecting the deep blue of the sky outside.
