Cello Resting on Pretoria Stage at Blue Hour
by Randi Combs
Warm amber stage light spills across the dark wood of a cello, highlighting the smooth curves of its body and the grain of the varnish. The instrument leans gently against a textured wall painted in muted earth tones, typical of the theater's backstage architecture. Behind the cello, the deep indigo glow of the evening falls through high windows, creating a cool contrast against the artificial warmth. Soft reflections shimmer on the polished floorboards and the metal tuning pegs, catching the fading natural light. Dust motes float lazily in the beams of light, settling on the black case lying nearby. The heavy velvet curtains hang motionless to the side, their deep red fabric absorbing the ambient glow. One tuning key rests on the floor, casting a sharp, dark shadow against the pale wood.
