Steel Beams Dipped in Zinc Bath at Night
by Dana Munoz
Stark fluorescent light cuts through the humid air of a Zagazig workshop, illuminating a massive galvanizing line. Heavy steel beams hang suspended, descending slowly into a glowing, molten zinc bath that ripples with heat distortion. The industrial machinery dominates the center of the frame, its metallic surfaces reflecting the harsh overhead glow. Along the stone walls, deep shadows pool quietly, showing the isolation of the late-night hour. Outside the visible frame, the monsoon season presses against the building, hinted at by the damp, heavy stillness of the indoor atmosphere. The molten metal glows orange against the cool gray of the steel, creating a sharp contrast of temperatures. One droplet of zinc rests on the edge of the dipping beam, suspended in mid-air before falling back into the vat.
