Hard coastal glare strikes the rusted iron of a steam locomotive as it navigates a switchback approach near Thanjavur. Rain-slicked tracks gleam under the heavy late afternoon sun, reflecting the humid sky above. The train, pulling a line of passenger cars, moves slowly along the curved rails that converge sharply toward a distant vanishing point. Steam rises in thick, white plumes, immediately dissolving into the damp, humid air that hangs low over the landscape.
