Sorting Produce in Hong Kong

by Sage Kelly

Rain-slicked asphalt in Mong Kok reflects the neon glow of a wet market stall, where a vendor in a translucent yellow raincoat sorts through crates of glossy eggplants. The first light of dawn cuts through the mist, creating sharp rim lighting on the plastic tarps and puddles. A discarded calligraphy brush lies abandoned on a damp wooden crate, its bristles matted with mud, against the sterile white styrofoam boxes stacked nearby. Steam rises from a pot of congee, blurring the background of hanging dried seafood.
