Arranging Produce in Hong Kong

by Elias Nava

A damp street corner in Sheung Wan glows with the muted pinks and greens of wet asphalt under the heavy, diffused light of a misty dawn. An elderly vendor in a translucent yellow raincoat stands behind a low stainless steel cart, arranging bright red dragon fruit and green pomelos in a weathered wooden crate. The fruit’s vivid skins contrast sharply with the gray fog clinging to the corrugated metal roof above. Steam rises gently from a large metal pot, blurring the background where neon signs from closed shops reflect faintly on the slick pavement. The vendor’s hands move with practiced efficiency, placing a single orange beside the crate, while the cool air hangs still around the colorful produce.
