Sorting Peonies in Hong Kong

by Nina Head

Rain-slicked asphalt reflects the neon glow of a wet market stall in Mong Kok, where a vendor in a translucent yellow raincoat sorts fresh peonies into plastic crates. The flowers, still damp with morning droplets, contrast sharply with the grey concrete and rusted metal shutters of the surrounding buildings. A discarded skateboard leans against a damp pillar nearby, its wheels sticky with recent rain. Steam rises from a pot of congee in the background, blurring the sharp edges of the wet street.
