Songline Ceremony in Darwin Hall with Impossible Light
by Faith Glass
Red ochre dust settles on the polished concrete floor of a Darwin prayer hall where figures in traditional ceremonial attire stand in deep, uniform shadow. Dramatic storm clouds press against the high glass walls, their grey mass reflected in a shallow pool of water on the ground. One circular arrangement of white stones sits in the center, lit by an inexplicable, blinding brightness that cuts through the heavy darkness. The light source is invisible, yet it illuminates the intricate patterns on the stones and the red sand clinging to the edges of the shadows. Sharp geometric lines of the hall's architecture frame the glowing circle, creating a stark boundary between the obscured participants and the radiant focal point. Dust motes hang suspended in the intense beam, while the rest of the room remains in absolute, silent obscurity.
