Somali Plowshare Catching Rain Light at Twilight

by Sheila Ponce

Deep shadow envelopes the foreground where a rusted iron plowshare rests against dark, saturated earth. The metal blade catches a sharp line of orange light from a setting sun breaking through low storm clouds. Freshly irrigated rows stretch into the distance, glistening with water that reflects the dimming sky. The soil is heavy and dark, marked by the fresh furrows of recent labor. In the background, the faint glow of city lights begins to puncture the encroaching dusk, hovering above the flat, wet horizon. Raindrops rest on the curved surface of the plow, catching the rim light. One bead of water slides slowly down the metal edge, merging with the wet soil below.
