Saffron Harvest Amidst Hay Bales in Somali Rain

by Sherry Langley

Dappled sunlight falls through broad leaves, casting shifting patches of bright yellow and deep shadow across a field of saffron crocus flowers. The ground is heavy with the dark, wet soil of the rainy season, where purple blooms stand in neat rows. To the left, tall bales of golden hay are stacked in a rough, textured wall. Fine particles of chaff and dust drift lazily through the air, catching the light in the gaps between the flowers. Wooden stakes mark the planting rows, creating strong leading lines that guide the view toward the horizon. A worker's hand reaches into the frame, fingers brushing the delicate petals. at the edge is one drop of rain clinging to the edge of a crocus petal, refracting the green of the surrounding leaves.
