Soap Vendor Cutting Bars at Niamey Dawn
by Kaylee Tyson
Thick mist rests on the wooden hull of a narrow boat floating on the Niger River, softening the edges of the morning. A vendor stands at the bow, his hands pressing a large knife into a pale block of soap. The blade slices through the solid mass, revealing a clean, creamy interior against the rough, wet wood of the stall. Low-hanging gray clouds weigh heavy over the water, diffusing the first light into a pale, even glow. Beside the cutting block, stacks of finished bars wait in neat rows, their surfaces still damp. The wooden planks beneath his feet show deep grooves from years of use, slick with river spray and soap residue. A shadow falls across the cut edge of the soap, highlighting the sharp contrast between the matte white surface and the dark, wet grain of the boat.
