Soap Maker Pours Lye Into Wooden Molds

Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky fills the high ceiling of a historic market hall in Istanbul, illuminating a soap maker at work. In the dead of winter, a figure pours a thick, pale lye mixture from a metal pitcher into long wooden molds lined up on a sturdy table. The molds show signs of age with their worn grain and darkened edges. Nearby surfaces, including the smooth stone floor and polished metal fixtures, hold faint, soft reflections of the pouring action. A foreground blur of hanging dried herbs creates a shallow depth of field, isolating the worker. The liquid settles into the troughs while the wooden texture remains visible against the pale mixture.
