Rainy Derby Hydrant Chained to Meter in beside a steamed-up bus shelter in Derby

Rainy Derby Hydrant Chained to Meter

by Glen Cunningham

Dark red paint coats the fire hydrant, its surface slick with recent rain that reflects the deep gray of late autumn clouds. A heavy iron chain loops through the hydrant’s cap and secures it to the base of a nearby parking meter. Steam rises from the bus shelter behind them, fogging the glass panels and blurring the street beyond. The subjects sit in deep shadow, outlined by a sharp rim of cool evening light that separates their forms from the gloom. Wet asphalt stretches out, showing faint reflections of the dramatic sky above. A puddle near the hydrant’s base catches the last light, mirroring the metal chain in a distorted silver arc.
