Heavy monsoon clouds press low over a public square near Nouakchott, casting the area in deep shadow just as the sun dips below the horizon. Long, ornate snake boats stand in silhouette against the fading amber sky, their decorated prows rising sharply like dark spines. The water reflects the dim light, creating a mirror of deep indigo and charcoal. Wooden planks and painted details on the boats appear as solid black shapes, stripped of color by the backlight. A stone archway frames the vessels, creating a distinct border around the dark forms. Wet mud coats the ground near the water's edge, showing deep footprints and the texture of saturated earth. at the edge is a single painted eye on a bow, barely visible against the gloom.
