Silhouette Mandrill Face at Golden Hour in in California

Silhouette Mandrill Face at Golden Hour

by Sheila Ritter

A sharp outline of a mandrill dominates the frame against a fading sky. The animal’s face is a dark shape, yet the vibrant red and blue skin on its muzzle and nose ridge catches the last light of the day, glowing like embers. Dust hangs low in the air, catching the golden backlight and creating a hazy layer just above the ground. The subject sits with an alert posture, muscles tense beneath the fur. Early winter light casts long, soft shadows across the dry grass in the background. The edges of the primate's ears are rimmed with light, separating the dark form from the bright horizon. One patch of reddish skin on the lower lip reflects the sun directly.
