Shrimp Trawler Nets at Shanghai Dawn

by Brent Simon

Cold silver light floods the Huangpu River as a shrimp trawler cuts through the water near the Old City. Diagonal lines of heavy fishing nets stretch from the deck into the mist, their wet ropes glistening under the pale sky. Peak autumn air hangs low as a thick fog obscures the distant shoreline, softening the sharp angles of the vessel's metal hull. The deck remains cluttered with coiled cables and rusted winches, their surfaces reflecting the dim, flat illumination. Water churns in a frothy wake behind the hull, while the diagonal tension of the deployed nets creates a stark geometric contrast against the soft, gray fog. One coil of rope rests on the wet, gray deck near the stern.
