First light of dawn casts a pale, gray-blue hue over the Kaohsiung harbor, where a traditional Chinese junk with battened sails rests quietly against the concrete quay. In the mid-ground, the heavy silhouette of a freight train sits idle in the rail yard, its metal cars reflecting the dim morning sky. The water is still, mirroring the muted tones of the industrial landscape. A few figures in dark work clothes stand near the bow of the junk, their movements slow and deliberate as they prepare for the day. The air is thick with the early morning mist, softening the edges of the distant cranes and warehouses that line the waterfront.
