Shielding Wares in Venice

Rain slicks the stone steps of a narrow Venetian alley, where a local vendor balances a wicker mending basket on his hip while adjusting his collar against the dusk chill. Beside him, a heavy iron boot scraper stands embedded in the wet pavement, catching the amber spill from a nearby lantern. The vendor’s hands, stained with dye and thread, rest near a stack of damp paperbacks he uses to shield his wares from the drizzle. Steam rises faintly from a thermos tucked into the basket’s weave, curling into the gray air. A magazine rack, tilted and rusted, leans against a stucco wall, holding glossy catalogs that reflect the streetlights in distorted puddles.
