Sfax Concrete Ramp Low Angle Pre-Dawn in inside a vaulted atrium in Sfax

Sfax Concrete Ramp Low Angle Pre-Dawn

by Joan Vega

Warm tungsten light spills from high windows onto a spiraling concrete parking ramp rising inside a vaulted atrium in Sfax. The wet, gray surfaces of the curved walls reflect the soft glow, showing the texture of the aggregate in the early spring rain. Humid air hangs visibly in the low light, softening the sharp edges of the architectural lines. The ramp ascends in a continuous helix, its converging geometry drawing toward a distant vanishing point near the ceiling. Small puddles on the floor mirror the overhead fixtures, adding pools of amber and gold to the cool gray tones. A shadow from the railing stretches across the wet pavement, at the base of the spiral structure in the quiet stillness of the pre-dawn hours.
