Seismograph on Mossy Ridge in Quito

by Katie Correa

Golden light strikes the curved metal housing of a seismograph anchored to a ridge covered in thick green moss. Low clouds hang heavy above the instrument, casting soft shadows that stretch across the damp ground. Tiny beads of condensation rest on the cold, brushed steel casing, catching the fading sun in sharp highlights. The device sits firmly on a concrete base, surrounded by wild vegetation typical of the Andean highlands. A thin wire runs from the unit into the earth, disappearing beneath the grass. The metal surface shows faint scratches from wind and weather, against the soft, spongy texture of the moss beneath. one drop of water slides slowly down the vertical edge of the housing, leaving a wet trail on the dark stone.
