Mossy Stone Bridge Over Stream in Quito
by Iris Barber
Honeyed evening light washes the scene, turning the ancient stone bridge into a dark silhouette against a perfectly clear sky. The structure spans a mountain stream near Guapulo, Quito, its arches and rough-hewn blocks defined only by the glow from behind. Thick green moss rests on the wet surfaces of the stones, against the dry, grey rock of the upper railing. The water below reflects the warm amber hue of the sky, rippling gently around the bridge's sturdy pillars. Early winter keeps the surrounding vegetation low and crisp, with bare branches visible along the stream banks. The bridge rests firmly on the rocky banks, its form sharp and distinct against the bright horizon. A final detail shows the dark outline of a small bird perched on the highest curve of the arch.
