Seismograph Case on Mule in Taichung Dawn
by Nolan Orr
Pale morning light falls through a thick, white mist that softens the edges of a weathered leather pannier strapped to a mule's flank. The seismograph battery case, a sturdy rectangular box with reinforced metal corners, sits centered in the frame, its dark green surface showing faint scratches and dust. Thin straps crisscross the leather, securing the equipment against the animal's ribcage. The surrounding negative space is filled with the gray-blue haze of early dawn, obscuring the background while leaving the textures of the worn leather and the matte finish of the battery case sharp and distinct. One metal buckle catches the diffused light, creating a small, bright highlight against the muted tones of the midsummer fog. The scene rests in a quiet stillness, defined by the weight of the gear and the density of the air.
