Sarangi Player Performs in Pointe-Noire Haveli
Soft light after rain fills the dim stage where a sarangi player bows mournfully. The musician sits cross-legged on a woven mat, fingers pressing the wooden strings of the three-stringed instrument. Behind the performer, carved wooden pillars and a high arched doorway define the haveli architecture. Noon glare falls through the open entrance, illuminating dust motes that drift across the polished floor. A small crowd stands in the background, faces turned toward the stage with expressions of communal exhilaration. The player wears a long cotton tunic in faded indigo, against the warm ochre tones of the surrounding walls. Sweat glistens on the musician's forehead, and the bow hair catches the light as it moves across the strings. A shadow from a nearby pillar falls sharply across the lower part of the stage.
