Gnawa Musician Playing Guembri on Theater Stage
by Ivan Lowery
Warm golden sunlight streams across a wooden theater stage, illuminating a Gnawa musician seated with a three-stringed guembri. The low angle of the setting sun stretches long, sharp shadows from the instrument's curved neck and the player's hands across the floorboards. Early autumn light casts a soft amber hue on the dark wood of the stage and the intricate metal details of the instrument. The musician wears traditional loose robes in deep indigo, against the pale dust motes suspended in the light beams. Behind the performer, the stone arches of Bab Bou Jeloud frame the stage entrance, their blue and white tiles glowing under the fading daylight. A wooden stool rests beside the musician, casting a dark silhouette against the illuminated floor. at the edge is the gleam of silver bells attached to the musician's ankle, catching the last rays of the sun.
