Rusted Double-Decker Buses in Night Shadow

by Arlene Gomez

Deep shadow swallows rows of abandoned double-decker buses parked near Yazd under a sky heavy with low-hanging winter clouds. Early winter air leaves a pale dust on the corrugated metal roofs, while rim light from the distant horizon carves thin silver edges along the upper decks. The vehicles stand in rigid parallel lines, their faded paint peeling to reveal orange rust that contrasts with the dark asphalt. Above, the clouds press low and gray, obscuring the stars but allowing a faint, cool glow to reflect off the wet ground. The leading lines of the parked buses draw toward the vanishing point where the shadows deepen into absolute blackness. One rusted handrail on the nearest bus catches the faint light, its curved metal gleaming against the matte decay.
