Romanesco Fractal Above Latvian Dunes at Dawn
by Dale Kim
A vibrant green Romanesco broccoli floret dominates the upper third, its spiraling logarithmic curves sharp against a pale nautical dawn sky. Below, the dry, cracked earth of Latvian dunes stretches into the distance, marked by deep wadis that cut through the arid terrain. Long, dark shadows from the low sun define the undulating sand ridges with cartographic precision. Along the immediate edges of the frame, rows of tiny shoebox-sized buildings sit incongruously on the sandy surface, their flat roofs and rectangular silhouettes rendered with the same clarity as the natural landscape. The air appears still after a clearing storm, leaving the ground dusted with fine particles that catch the faint morning light. The texture of the broccoli's conical scales mirrors the rough, eroded texture of the sand below.
