Ripped Payphone Near Qingdao Metro Entrance

by Lena Reilly

Sodium-vapor light spills across damp pavement, illuminating a gray payphone torn from its wall mount near a Qingdao metro entrance. The metal casing bears deep scratches and peeling paint, hanging by a single frayed cable. Wet leaves and crumpled paper drift along the curb where wind funnels through the underpass. Dark shadows pool beneath the overhang, against the orange glow reflecting off the slick asphalt. Raindrops rest on the plastic receiver and the cracked glass panel, distorting the faded instructions inside. A rusted bolt marks the empty hole in the concrete wall where the unit once stood. The scene ends with a puddle mirroring the fractured reflection of the streetlamp above.
