Ripped Payphone Under Flickering Light in beneath a flickering underpass light in Greater Sudbury

Ripped Payphone Under Flickering Light

by Beatrice Holmes

A rusted metal payphone hangs by a single wire beneath a concrete overpass in Greater Sudbury. The box is torn from its mounting, exposing jagged edges where it once connected to the wall. Above, a flickering fluorescent tube casts a sickly yellow glow that dances on the wet asphalt. Heat shimmer rises from the pavement, distorting the distant streetlights into wavering lines of orange and red. Autumn leaves in shades of burnt orange and brown rest on the curb, scattered across the cracked ground. The scene sits in the stillness before dawn, illuminated only by the starlight filtering through the concrete shadows and the faint glow of the city horizon.
