Half-Submerged Waterwheel in Ho Chi Minh Tea Hall

by Elaine Neal

Rust-colored iron gears and a massive, half-submerged waterwheel occupy the wide expanse of a tea-processing hall near Thao Dien. Fine dust particles float in bright shafts of afternoon light that cut through high windows. Water pools on the concrete floor, reflecting the rusted metal and the dark, damp interior. Stacks of drying tea leaves line the periphery, their brown leaves against the gray, industrial machinery. The waterwheel sits motionless, its wooden spokes stained with algae and silt, anchored in the stagnant pool. One rusted bolt on a nearby support beam catches the reflected glare, marking the boundary between the functional tea operation and the abandoned mechanical relic.
