Rain-slicked Newari timber frames glisten under the diffuse gray light of a Kathmandu morning, where a young man in a damp shirt pauses on a narrow stairwell landing. He wipes his face with a crumpled handkerchief while balancing a wooden mallet against his shoulder, having just descended from a rooftop repair. Below, the street is a mirror of wet asphalt and faded yellow traffic lines, reflecting the muted tones of adjacent brickwork and corrugated tin roofs. A rusted cabinet latch on a ground-floor shutter catches the weak light, against the smooth, dark wood of the stairs.
