Arranging Scarves in Kathmandu

Rain slicks the narrow brick alley of Thamel, turning the pavement into a dark mirror reflecting the neon glow of a closed electronics shop. A local vendor in a yellow raincoat stands under a corrugated tin awning, arranging a stack of wool scarves in deep reds and indigos on a wet wooden crate. Beside the textiles, a dented metal rim from an old bicycle wheel catches the pinkish dusk light, its rusted surface against the slick plastic of a nearby trash bag. In the background, the blurred shape of a motorbike passes through the mist, its headlight cutting a cone through the gray air.
