Boy at First Light
by Tony Simpson
Wet basalt paving stones in Thamel reflect the pale, diffuse sky after a monsoon downpour, while a vendor’s cart sits heavy with stacked aluminum pot lids gleaming under the gray light. A young boy in a faded school uniform balances precariously on a wooden ladder leaning against a stucco wall, carefully adjusting a tangled vine that has crept through a rusted window grate. Raindrops bead on the green leaves, against the rough, peeling paint of the building’s facade. Nearby, plastic crates hold rows of colored glass bottles, their surfaces slick and dark, waiting to be washed. The quiet, urgent rhythm of recovery, where domestic clutter meets the damp, heavy air of early morning Nepal.
