First Light on Vendor in Kathmandu

by Julia Meza

Rain-slicked red brick walls of a narrow Thamel alley reflect the pale, diffused first light, creating a cool, high-contrast sheen on the uneven stone pavement. A local vendor balances a heavy wicker basket tray on his head, navigating past a parked motorbike with faded decals. Beside him, a small shop front displays a stack of oxidized copper pots, their dull surfaces catching the weak morning glow against the dark, damp wood of the shutter. Wet twine fibers coil loosely on a wooden counter, absorbing the moisture from the air. One ceramic mug sits abandoned near the entrance, steam long gone, while a linen napkin clings to a railing, heavy with water.
