Bright midmorning light floods a quiet courtyard at the edge of a sacred pool in New Mexico. Rows of metal trays hold piles of dark brown dates and clear glass bottles filled with water, arranged in precise lines on the sun-baked stone floor. The hard coastal glare casts sharp, short shadows beneath each tray, highlighting the rough texture of the masonry and the smooth reflection on the water surface. A perfectly clear blue sky stretches overhead, offering no clouds to soften the intensity of the sun. The cool season air does not show in the image, but the crispness of the light suggests a chill in the stone. The stillness of the water mirrors the geometric order of the offerings. one drop of condensation rests on the rim of the nearest glass bottle.
