Rain Beads on Birch Bark Macro

by Kathy Bowers

Honeyed evening light floods the frame, illuminating the intricate, peeling layers of paper birch bark in extreme close-up. White and silver strips of papery skin curl away from the dark, horizontal lenticels, creating a rugged, geometric texture. Tiny, perfect spheres of rain rest on the uneven surface, refracting the golden sunset into jewel-like points of light. Beside the organic wood, a smooth metal surface catches the same warm glow, pooling reflections that ripple gently under the droplets. The late spring atmosphere settles on the grain, highlighting the contrast between the dry, flaking bark and the wet, slick metal. One drop slides slowly down a vertical fissure in the white paper.
