Rain Beaded Carrots After Irrigation in Queensland

by Megan Zimmerman

Water droplets rest on the rough, orange skins of carrots arranged in a neat furrow, glistening under the low, horizontal light of a setting sun. The earth around them is dark and wet, against the pale, dry stubble of a harvested grain field stretching into the distance. A light drizzle falls, adding a fine sheen to the soil and the vegetable rows. The sky above is a soft gradient of gray and fading gold, casting long, flat shadows across the furrow. Each carrot root shows a tapered shape, the tips pointing toward the center of the bed. The wet surface reflects the dim sky, creating a mirror-like quality on the soil between the plants. One drop rolls down the side of a carrot, merging with the puddle below.
