Prickly Pear Cactus with Red Fruit on Forest Floor

Bright midmorning light floods a fern-lined forest floor near Kumba, illuminating a prickly pear cactus resting directly on the earth. Vibrant red fruits rest on the flat, green pads, their waxy skins catching the clear dry mountain sun. Fern fronds surround the cactus, some curled from the wind that skitters leaves across the ground. The soil appears dark and textured, scattered with small stones and dried plant matter. Shadows stretch sharply beneath the pads, defining their three-dimensional form against the softer green of the surrounding undergrowth. A cluster of bright red berries sits at the edge of a pad, against the muted browns of the forest floor.
