Cactus Pod Edges Catch Starlight in on a fern-lined forest floor near Hyderabad

Cactus Pod Edges Catch Starlight

by Donald Ritter

Faint starlight and ground glow define the predawn darkness over a fern-lined forest floor near Hyderabad. A cactus seed pod sits atop its crown, its ridged edges catching the weak light while the rest of the plant merges with the shadows. Heat haze distorts the air above the rainy season foliage, blurring the distance. Dark fern fronds curve against the base of the cactus, their shapes merging into the gloom. The minimalist composition isolates the pod as a small, textured form against the vast, dim expanse. A sharp highlight runs along the upper rim of the pod where the starlight strikes directly.
