Predawn Koi Over Belize Ruin Monsoon Night in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses in Belize

Predawn Koi Over Belize Ruin Monsoon Night

by Amina Odom

Cold moonlight washes the crumbling stone bridge, where one arch has collapsed into the dark river below. Tall grasses reclaim the courtyard, their blades glistening with monsoon moisture under the pale sky. Drifting dust particles form faint shafts of light cutting through the predawn darkness. Suspended high above the ruin, a giant koi fish hangs motionless like a living parade balloon, its orange scales reflecting the faint silver glow. The stone surface is rough and pitted, against the smooth, impossible curve of the fish. Water drips from the broken masonry, creating small ripples in the river below the floating creature. The scene balances the weight of ancient decay against the floating mystery of the suspended animal.
