Bolivian Devil Dancers in São Paulo Monsoon Fog
by Billy Burns
Deep indigo twilight washes over a wet urban plaza where Bolivian Oruro Carnival diablada dancers stand in disciplined formation. Heavy monsoon rain has left the pavement slick, mirroring the vibrant red and gold of their elaborate devil masks and sequined costumes. Thick ground fog pools around their boots, obscuring the lower legs while the upper bodies remain sharp against the gloom. Reflected light from nearby streetlamps glints off the waterlogged asphalt and the metallic surfaces of the dancers' headdresses. The performers hold rigid postures, their eyes focused forward through the painted eye slits of their masks. A cluster of colorful flags in the background blurs into the darkening sky. The reflection of a dancer's red shoulder patch stretches across a puddle in the foreground, anchoring the composition to the wet ground.
