Predawn Athens Metro Train Emerging from Tunnel into Early Morning Light

by Troy Talley

A heavy metro train pushes out of a dark, arched tunnel entrance, its headlights cutting through the predawn darkness of Athens. The steel wheels screech against the tracks as the carriages, painted in faded 1990s transit colors, reveal their full length to the fading night. Steam rises from the ventilation grates, mixing with the cool morning air above the station platform. Concrete pillars and tiled walls frame the scene, typical of the city's older underground stations. The sky above remains a deep indigo, with the first hints of gray light beginning to touch the horizon beyond the station roof. A few early commuters stand near the edge, waiting in silence as the train comes to a halt.
