Predawn Auckland Metro Train Emerging From Tunnel Into Early Morning Light

by Sherry Villegas

A heavy steel commuter train pushes out of the dark concrete throat of an underground station into the dim predawn light of Auckland. The wet platform tiles reflect the harsh fluorescent strips overhead, against the deep blue shadows of the tunnel mouth. Steam rises slightly from the tracks as the engine idles, its headlights cutting through the mist. A lone figure in a raincoat stands near the edge, waiting for the doors to open. The city skyline looms faintly in the distance, obscured by low clouds and the heavy industrial architecture of the railway infrastructure.
