Potter Shaping Clay Wheel Foundry Aswan
by Ross Watson
North-window sidelight cuts across the dusty interior of an Aswan foundry, illuminating the back of a potter seated at a spinning wheel. The worker wears a heavy, dust-coated linen tunic that rests on the shoulders under the bright midday sun. Wet, grey clay spirals upward under the potter's palms, forming a smooth, wet cylinder that catches the cool light. The floor is rough concrete, slick with water and scattered clay slurry that creates muted, distorted reflections of the overhead beams. Tools hang on a rusted rack against the far wall, their metal surfaces dull against the warm, dusty air. The potter's forearms are tense, fingers pressing rhythmically into the rotating mass of earth, holding the form steady against the centrifugal force. A final smear of wet clay rests on the wheel head.
