Elderly Potter Centering Clay in Shanghai Workshop

Pale dawn light slides across the concrete floor of a Shanghai workshop, illuminating an elderly potter seated before a spinning wheel. The hands, mapped with age and stained with wet earth, press firmly into a gray mound of clay that rises from the center of the wheel. Early spring air seems to hold the moisture in the air, visible as a sheen on the clay's surface. In the dim corners, the warm glow of oil lamps contrasts with the cool blue of the morning sky slipping through a high window. The potter wears a simple dark jacket, their posture rigid with focus. Dust motes float in the slanted beams near the workbench. one drop of water rests on the edge of the spinning clay, catching the light before falling to the floor.
