Shaping Terracotta in Valencia
by Cash Vaughan
Golden hour light slants through the open doorway of a traditional Valencia ceramic workshop, illuminating a workbench cluttered with the honest debris of creation. Several unglazed terracotta pots sit in the foreground, their rough, porous surfaces absorbing the warm, low-angle sun while nearby, a row of finished pieces gleams with vibrant cobalt and amber glazes. A potter’s hands, dusted with fine white slip, carefully rotate a vessel on a slow, electric wheel, the motion blurring slightly against the sharp focus of the hanging tools. Copper pots catch the last intense rays of daylight on a high shelf, casting long, amber reflections across the dusty concrete floor, blending the ancient craft with the fading afternoon warmth.
