Pigeons Rise from Kinshasa Street at Dawn in beside a steamed-up bus shelter in Kinshasa

Pigeons Rise from Kinshasa Street at Dawn

by Morgan Cannon

Silver rain coats the asphalt near a bus shelter where steam rises into the pale morning air. A flock of pigeons lifts from the wet corner, wings blurring against the gray sky. The first rays of sunrise cut through the drizzle, turning droplets on the pavement into scattered diamonds. Rough concrete walls frame the shelter, while the birds' gray feathers contrast with the dark, slick ground. Wet leaves and debris rest on the edges of the curb. One pigeon hovers mid-flight, its shadow stretching across the wet pavement before vanishing into the urban gloom.
