Winter Pigeon Roosts Under Amber Streetlights in beside a steamed-up bus shelter in New York

Winter Pigeon Roosts Under Amber Streetlights

by Selena Nixon

Amber light pools across wet asphalt beneath a concrete underpass, illuminating a flock of pigeons clustered along the high ledge. Steam rises from a nearby bus shelter, curling into the predawn darkness and softening the edges of the brickwork. Puddles on the ground mirror the glowing overhead fixtures, stretching distorted reflections of the birds and the damp wall. The cold air hangs heavy, visible as a haze around the light sources, while frozen patches of ice line the curbside. Feathers appear matted and dark against the grey stone, and water drips slowly from the overhang. One droplet hangs from the concrete lip, catching the faint glow before falling into the shadowed gutter below.
