Resident Walking in Bergen

by Chase Johnston

A narrow, rain-slicked alleyway in Bergen’s Bryggen district frames a heavy, yellow-painted timber building leaning precariously over the cobblestones. Condensation beads on the dark wood, against the bright, peeling paint that has survived centuries of harsh winter weather. In the mid-ground, a local resident in a bright orange rain jacket walks away from the camera, their reflection distorted in a large, puddle-filled depression on the uneven stone path. The low winter sun casts long, sharp shadows across the wet ground, highlighting the texture of the moss growing in the crevices between the stones. The damp, vertical density of the city, where modern life moves quietly through historic, weathered structures.
