Oven at Late Morning Light
by Ricky Steele
Sunlight slashes across the worn terrazzo floor of a cramped pastel-painted kitchen in the Ribeira district, illuminating a chaotic work surface where a pair of flour-dusted hands lifts a tray of golden, rising pastries from a heavy iron oven. The air is thick with steam that catches the bright late morning light, creating a hazy veil over a stack of paperbacks used as makeshift trivets and a scattered orange peel curled near a ceramic bowl. A mismatched set of kitchen utensils rests in a chipped enamel pot, their wooden handles stained with years of use, while a jigsaw puzzle tin sits open nearby, its pieces spilled onto a checkered cloth.
